Planning a Cake Smash Photoshoot: Themes, Timing & What to Expect
A cake smash is exactly what it sounds like: your almost-one-year-old, a beautiful cake, and full permission to destroy it. Here's how to plan one that's fun for the baby and frame-worthy for you.
When to schedule it
Book the session 2–4 weeks before the first birthday. You'll have edited photos in time for the party, the invitation cards and the grandparents' WhatsApp groups. Morning slots work best — babies are happiest before the first nap.
Choosing a theme
Our most-requested themes right now:
- Boho rainbow — soft arches, muted colours, works for boys and girls alike
- Jungle safari — palm leaves and plush animals, a forever favourite
- Cricket little champ — very Ahmedabad, very adorable
- Princess garden & outdoor florals — gorgeous as a morning outdoor session
Match the cake to the set, not the other way around — a simple one-tier cake in theme colours photographs better than an elaborate one.
The cake itself
What actually happens at the session
- Clean portraits first — dressed up, pre-frosting, while everyone's fresh.
- The smash — we place the cake and let curiosity do the rest. Some babies dive in; some poke it suspiciously. Both make wonderful photos.
- The splash bath — a bubbly tub to wash off, which routinely produces the best laughs (and photos) of the whole session.
What to bring
A change of clothes for baby, a snack, and a sense of humour. We handle the set, outfit, cake, towels and the entire cleanup.
